Key Marco is a small island located off the coast of Marco Island in southwest Florida, renowned for its historical significance. The island is most famous for the discovery of the "Key Marco Cat," a carved wooden figure of a cat, and a rich collection of artifacts, including pottery, masks, and other tools, that were uncovered during an archaeological excavation in the early 1900s. These artifacts are attributed to the Calusa, a Native American tribe that inhabited the region for centuries before European contact. Today, Key Marco is a private area, with no public access, but its rich archaeological legacy continues to draw interest from historians and archaeologists.
